Bookkeeping for Upland businesses

The Upland business license in plain words

Upland says every business needs a license, for profit or not. That includes home based businesses, people paid on a 1099, short term rental owners and out of town vendors at special events. Employees paid on a W-2 do not need one.

You apply online through the city's license portal. The city asks for a zoning clearance before it issues the license. Some home based businesses also need an Administrative Use Permit. Start on the City of Upland business license page.

Each account gets a permanent renewal date of June 30 or December 31. Penalties start if the payment is more than 30 days late. You need a new application if you change owners, change the type of business, move locations or change your EIN.

How we work with Upland businesses

We do monthly bookkeeping and payroll. We work in QuickBooks Online and Xero. We close your books by day 10 and send a profit and loss statement, a balance sheet and a cash summary.

We are not the city and we are not lawyers. Rules, costs and forms change, so always check with the city before you apply or renew. This guide is based on the city's own business license information.

Questions people ask

Does my Upland business need a new application if I move?
Yes. A change in location needs a new application and a new zoning clearance. A change in owner, type of business or EIN does too. Check the city's business license page for the current steps.
Do you apply for or renew my Upland license for me?
No. You apply and renew with the city. We record what you paid in your books.
Do you do payroll for my staff?
Yes. Payroll is one of our two services, along with monthly bookkeeping.
